At approximately the third bell on Day 1031, Watch Officer Brennan observed a figure standing at the outer approach to the eastern gate. The figure was standing still, facing the gate, at a distance of approximately thirty metres. Visibility was reduced by fog. The figure was not moving.
Watch Officer Brennan called the standard challenge twice. The figure did not respond. Watch Officer Brennan called a second officer to the post. By the time the second officer reached the position, the figure was no longer visible. The fog had thickened. No sound of movement had been heard.
A search of the outer approach was conducted at first light. No tracks were found. The ground outside the eastern gate had been XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. This was noted in the field log and is noted here.
The gate log for Day 1031 records no entry or departure between second bell and dawn. The eastern gate was secured throughout this period. The lock mechanism was inspected the following morning and found to be undamaged.
